I went back to the room. The doorman, who was standing next to the policeman. Inside, Cindy was there. Her head rested on Carl’s shoulder. Her face was red and swollen. 

They both glared at me.

“He went over the edge,” I said to them. My voice was far away. I felt their hate. I walked out.

“I was bait, wasn’t I?” she called from inside the room. 

“Carl will take care of you.”

“Was I bait, doctor?” she screamed. Her voice ragged with rage. 

“No,” I said over my shoulder.
